Today Washington finds itself in a self-inflicted crisis caused by years of out-of-control spending and borrowing money that we do not have. The House of Representatives have now passed two bills with my support--Cut, Cap and Balance and the Budget Control Act, that would reduce spending by more than any increase in the debt limit and ensure that the federal government does not default on its financial obligations.

Senator Reid and the liberals have a different plan. The Reid plan hands the President a blank check that will allow him to continue his spending spree through the next election. In other words, under the Reid Plan, the President would have the unilateral authority to raise the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion, no questions asked. No Balanced Budget Amendment is required, in fact, no vote from Congress is required at all to raise the debt ceiling a second time. The bottom line is that this bill raises the debt ceiling far more than it cuts spending. This kind of irresponsible behavior by the Federal Government is what has gotten us in this mess in the first place.

I cannot support a plan that is no more than a continuation of business as usual in Washington. The solution is simple: the federal government needs to stop spending money that it doesn't have. And that's just the way it is.
